Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Removal of Wisdom Teeth in Columbus

Great SmileWisdom teeth are the last four molars in the upper and lower jaws, and they usually erupt between the ages of 17-25. When wisdom teeth erupt, they can threaten to push nearby teeth if there is not enough space available, also if they fail to erupt properly they can cause pain and discomfort as well as increase the risk of infection. In these situations, it is necessary to extract the wisdom teeth to avoid infections or alleviate the pain and discomfort and prevent the other teeth from shifting and becoming misaligned.

How Are Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

  • Your doctor will examine your mouth and order dental X-rays to find out the position of your wisdom teeth
  • Local anesthesia is administered to the area being treated
  • The wisdom teeth are pulled out of their socket using special pliers
  • Gauze is placed on the space of the extracted teeth until bleeding stops and the spaces heal.

What if my Wisdom Teeth Are Impacted?

  • Your doctor will examine your mouth and order dental X-rays to find out the position of your wisdom teeth
  • Local anesthesia is administered to the area being treated
  • An incision is made on the gum line to access the impacted wisdom teeth
  • The impacted wisdom teeth might need to be broken into pieces if they are too big to be extracted as a whole
  • Once the teeth have been completely removed, the incisions are sutured
  • Gauze is placed on the space of the extracted tooth until bleeding stops and the space heals.

After extraction, you might experience a slight discomfort, swelling and pain but will subside after a couple of hours or days after the procedure. Good oral hygiene is strongly recommended in order to avoid infection.
